A trip to the Westruper Heide is particularly nice when the heather plants are in bloom in July and August. The four color-coded themed routes, each 3 to 4 km in length, lead mostly on sandy paths to the “highlights” of the Westruper Heide, which are explained in an entertaining way on appropriate themed boards. At the nature experience points, young and old explorers can track down the ant lion and explore the “juniper creep path”.
There are also barrier-free routes for people with limited mobility or for the visually impaired.
In the summer months the area is grazed by Heidschnucken sheep. In this way, unwanted birches and other trees are eaten away and the heather can develop freely.
