Naturpark Hohe Mark – a landscape that impresses with its rugged, pristine character.
A walk through the heath is an experience at any time of year, but it unfolds its very own magic especially in late summer when the heather blooms in delicate violet. Then time seems to slow down, the gaze wanders across wide, sandy plains, and the wind carries the scent of heather and bell heather.
At the same time, this landscape tells a story of hard work and bygone eras. The beauty of the heath is no accident: the arduous sod cutting of earlier generations, backbreaking physical labor on nutrient-poor sandy soils, laid the foundation for what seems so natural today. Where arable farming was hardly possible, heather plants spread – undemanding, resilient, and still shaping the landscape today.
The road runs right through the middle. Stage 5 of the Hohe Mark Steigs and invites you to discover this unique cultural landscape step by step. Anyone who travels here quickly realizes: the Westruper Heide is more than just a beautiful destination. It's a place to pause, marvel, and understand – and definitely worth a visit. The Hohe Mark Cycle Route also offers a wonderful opportunity to do so. "From the water to the heath" goes.
