Kirchheller Heide and Hiesfelder Wald

Into the Hiesfeld Forest and the Kirchheller Heath, where deciduous forests with beech, oak, alder and birch trees dominate.

In the heart of the Kirchheller Heide, the changing landscape of nature reveals itself in all its fascinating glory. The Rotbach and Schwarzbach streams meander gently through alder groves and tranquil remnants of swamp forest – a peaceful, almost forgotten corner of the landscape, reshaped over time by mining subsidence. Here, water finds its own way, and that is precisely what makes it so captivating.

A true highlight is the expansive Heidesee lake. What was once a dredged gravel pit is now a place to marvel at and linger: with gently sloping shores, small islands, and plenty of space for nature and relaxation. A place where you'll want to stay longer before continuing your journey, perhaps on your Hohe Mark Cycle Route day trip. Water-rich at Niederrhein

Suggestions for parking options:
Parking lot Halde Haniel, Birkhahnstraße 29, 46145 Oberhausen

The contrast becomes striking when you take the path upwards – up to the Haniel spoil heap. From here, a sweeping view opens up across a so-called post-mining landscape: visibly shaped by human activity, powerful, rugged, and impressive. A change of perspective that lingers in the mind.

And then the path leads back into the greenery. Into the Hiesfeld Forest and the Kirchhellen Heath, where deciduous forests of beech, oak, alder, and birch dominate. Here, the quiet but steady change becomes palpable – towards a more natural, diverse landscape. A place that demonstrates how nature and the future belong together, to be experienced on the Green Pot Tour.
