Hedgehog are nocturnal animals. They roam their territories after dark in search of food or shelter. They often travel several kilometers in one night. Artificially lit gardens and parks disturb hedgehogs while they search for food. In addition, day- and night-active robotic lawnmowers can cause serious injuries.
The hedgehog depends on the dark and quiet night to find food, reproduce, and live safely. But its habitat is increasingly threatened by artificial light and modern technologies.
Artificial light, whether from street lamps, garden lights, or buildings, alters the hedgehog's nocturnal environment and disrupts its natural rhythm. Hedgehogs orient themselves in the dark and rely on their senses to navigate safely through the night. Too much light confuses them and makes them more vulnerable to hazards such as traffic.
Robotic lawnmowers are practical for well-maintained gardens, but they can pose a deadly threat to hedgehogs. Because hedgehogs curl up when threatened and don't flee, they are often caught by the robots' sharp blades. Hedgehogs are especially vulnerable at night, when the robots often work unnoticed. Many hedgehogs suffer serious injuries or die as a result of such accidents.
What can we do?
To protect the hedgehog, we can take some simple measures:
Reducing artificial light: Reduce garden lighting, turn it off, or use dimmable, warm light.
Using robotic lawnmowers during the day: Allow robots to work only during daylight hours when hedgehogs are sleeping and less active.
Creating hedgehog-friendly gardens: Hiding places such as piles of leaves, hedges or hedgehog houses.
