Bright green beautyFormerly known as the Oak Barbet, this beautiful butterfly represents the oak-dominated forests in the Büngener/Dingdener Heide area like no other.
In Europe, the butterflies have a wingspan of 17 to 23 millimeters and a medium to strong body. Their forewings are broad and only 1,5 to twice as long as they are wide. The hindwings are about the same width as the forewings and are broadly rounded.
Although its caterpillars can develop on various deciduous trees, the species shows a clear preference for oaks.
Caterpillars of the giant boat moth have dense, long hairs. They pupate in characteristic, double-walled, keeled cocoons.
The first generation of butterflies flies between June and August. A second, smaller generation follows in September in favorable years.
