The White Fen is one of those places where you realize after just a few steps: everything here is a little different.
Vast skies, soft ground, and a landscape that seems to breathe quietly. Anyone who has ever traveled here quickly understands why bogs are so fascinating.
The White Fen owes its name to the cotton grass. When its white, cottony tufts dance in the wind, the moor almost looks as if someone has painted it with a brush and paint. It was called the "White Fen"—regardless of whether there were other "White Fens" further south or even in Holland. This one here at Gescher is unique enough.
The White Fen was once vast. Together with the Black Fen, the Scholler Fen, and the Kuhlen Fen, it formed a moorland of impressive size. But then it was drained, excavated, and exploited – until only a small but precious remnant remained of the once-great natural wonder: the Fürstenkuhle, surrounding an old moorland pond. Fortunately, the value of this piece of nature was recognized in time, and it was placed under protection.

Today, the Fürstenkuhle is one of the few places in North Rhine-Westphalia where a raised bog can come back to life. And that's exactly what's happening here – quietly, but with tremendous power. Sphagnum mosses are growing, cotton grass is returning, sundews are catching insects, and cranberries are glowing among the cushions. In spring, moor frogs create truly goosebump-inducing moments with their mysterious chorus. "Frog choruses and silence" – that's the promise of the second stage of the Hohemark Cycle Route.
The most beautiful way to explore the moor is slowly, on a walk from Kuhlenvenn to Fürstenkuhle: across boardwalks that guide you safely through, or over gently springy peat soils that make every step tactile. And as you look, listen, and marvel, you might think: How wonderful that there are places where nature is allowed to be itself again. That's exactly what the Weiße Venn is for.
