Büngener Dingdener Heide

Welcome to the Büngerner Dingdener Heide – one of the largest contiguous green areas in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Büngerner Dingdener Heide – a true nature experience in the north of Hamminkeln! Forests, HeidenMeadows and fields alternate here like in a picture book, making the landscape as diverse as it is captivating. Perfect for breathing deeply, exploring, and enjoying.

Anyone traveling here embarks on a journey through time. This is particularly enjoyable while cycling or walking: every corner of the Dingden Heath tells a different story of the landscape's history. Centuries ago, people used the deciduous forest as pastureland. Cattle and pigs grazed on acorns, beechnuts, and young shoots – the forest thinned, leaving behind mighty old trees, the so-called "pasture trees." Some of them still stand today, silent witnesses to centuries past.

From the 17th century onward, land use increased further, forests were cleared – and suddenly, barren, open heathlands spread. The next change followed in the 19th century: rapidly growing pine forests were established, their timber highly sought after in mining. When large forest fires raged in the 1920s, a new phase began: meadows and pastures henceforth dominated the landscape, accompanied by livestock farming. Since the 1960s, modern agriculture has finally become part of the landscape.

What's fascinating is that all these eras are still visible in the Büngerner Dingdener Heide today. Some require a bit of patience – such as the wood-pasture, which is currently being carefully expanded. Others are very much alive: sheep keep the heathland short, and storks and rare wading birds are once again thriving in the damp meadows. And right in the middle of it all: visitors enjoying the peace, vastness, and diversity of this unique landscape.

Anyone who wants to consciously experience all of this should check out the Landstreifer “Time travel” Don't miss it. This hike leads you step by step through the history of landscape design – informative, varied, and right through a natural setting that never ceases to amaze. Nature & History- A journey through time in a fascinating cultural landscape, also possible by bike on the 8th stage of the Hohe Mark Cycle Route.
