Forest area: The Haard

Far away from everyday life and yet very close: The Haard is a wooded area where you can get lost. möchte.

As the largest contiguous forest area in Naturpark Hohe Mark It surprises with its sheer size, its tranquility – and with a landscape that is anything but boring. Hills and hilltops alternate with quiet, dry valleys, narrow paths with wide trails. Houses? Hardly any. But plenty of space to breathe.

Hiking here reveals a new experience around every bend: the idyllic Jammertal (Valley of Tears), whose lush greenery charmingly belies its name. The Stimberg, at 157 meters, is the highest point in the area. NaturparkThe climb is rewarded with a sweeping view. And perhaps you'll suddenly find yourself standing before a gnarled sandstone slab – a true "devil's stone," as it's known locally.

Suggestions for parking options:

Hiking parking lot 58 Forsthaus Haidberg, 45770 Marl
Parking lot at Am Stimbergpark, corner of Buschstr., 45739 Oer-Erkenschwick
Parking area for hikers on Haardgrenzweg, Haardgrenzweg 338, 45739 Oer-Erkenschwick
Hiking parking lot 55 (Mutter Wehner), Haardstraße 196/198, 45739 Oer-Erkenschwick

No wonder, then, that the Hohe Mark Steig leads past here: His Stage 5 and partly also Stage 6 It winds its way right through the Haard forest, showcasing its most beautiful side – varied, tranquil, and full of natural moments. For those who prefer a walk, here are two options: Countryside Trail "Gernebach Valley or "Haard on the border"

The fire lookout and observation towers on the Rennberg and Farnberg mountains are particularly impressive. From the top, a panoramic view unfolds, which, on a clear day, includes... Niederrhein It extends all the way to the Sauerland region. And incidentally, one can discover how the Haard forest is changing: more and more beeches and oaks are growing among the pines – a forest in transition, diverse and vibrant.

The Haard is not a place for haste. It's a place to set off, marvel, and arrive. Perfect for anyone seeking more than just a walk outdoors.
