Baumberge and Stevertal

Who in the Münsterland Anyone traveling through the region will inevitably encounter it: Baumberg sandstone. It shimmers in the sun, ranging from light to golden yellow – and for good reason. For centuries, this "Westphalian marble" has been a true star: used in the construction of palaces, churches, and watermills, prized by stonemasons and sculptors, and traded throughout Northern Europe. Baumberg sandstone can even be found at Cologne Cathedral, Aachen Cathedral, and in Osnabrück. A true gem. Münsterländer Globetrotter!

If you are walking in Münsterland As you travel, you'll encounter sandstone at every turn. Magnificent farmhouses line the roads – and almost every self-respecting farm has at least a solid foundation made of Baumberg sandstone. No wonder: this stone shapes the region's typical play of colors like no other.

It's no wonder the people of Baumberg are immensely proud of "their" stone. To this day, there are two active quarries and even a dedicated sandstone museum. And those who wander attentively through the quiet beech forests will repeatedly stumble upon old, long-abandoned quarries – silent witnesses to a centuries-old craft tradition.

Things get quite high on the Westerberg: at 187 meters, it is the highest point of the MünsterlandAt the top of the Longinus Tower, a magnificent panoramic view awaits – weather permitting – that will take your breath away. The descent is particularly idyllic: numerous springs rise here, sending their water on a journey in three different directions – to the Münster Aa towards the Ems, via the Vechte and Berkel rivers into the Netherlands, or southwards via the Stever river, until it finally feeds Lake Haltern and flows into the Lippe river.

The narrow upper Stever valley is one of the most beautiful corners of the MünsterlandIt: magnificent farmhouses, blossoming orchards, and right in the middle, a true favorite subject for both camera and heart – the old Schulze Westerath watermill. And what is this venerable building largely made of? Why, Baumberg sandstone, of course.

Nature, history and authenticity Münsterland-A feeling – on this beautiful spot of earth, they lie before you, quite literally carved from stone. Just set off, discover, and enjoy!
