Action: Earth Night

On September 19.9th it will be LIGHTS OUT for one night!

Because by using more and more artificial light, we humans are making the nights on this planet brighter and brighter.

On September 19.9th, it's time again: LIGHTS OUT for one night! Because through the increasing use of artificial light, we humans are making the nights on this planet ever brighter. This so-called light pollution kills hundreds of billions of insects (pollinators) every year, irritates birds and many other living creatures (including plants), makes sleep less restful, promotes disease, and makes the starry sky disappear. The crazy thing is: About one-third of all light sources shine at night for nothing and no one.

Join in. Turn off the lights. So that our planet can experience a naturally dark night at least once a year. And so that this action will promote a more responsible use of artificial light in the future.

Turn off outside lights. Turn off (or at least partially turn off) all light sources that aren't essential for safety. This includes, for example, shop window/advertising lighting, as well as door, house, property, and facade lighting, as well as natural area and garden lighting. Close blinds. No one has to sit in the dark at home during Earth Night. Simply closing the blinds, roller shades, or curtains on the windows is enough. This will make the night noticeably darker.

A night in the world with as little artificial light as possible.

Through Earth Night, the world is given an almost naturally dark night be treated to this. So that all living beings on this planet can experience a clear change between light and dark at least once a year. Because life has been programmed for billions of years on this planet. It is even vital for maintaining health. The Earth Night is intended to be a regular reminder of how wasteful and thoughtless we are with artificial light and the great strides we are making towards losing the night. Earth Night is intended to create awareness of how necessary a dark night is for nature, humans and all other living beings. It is intended to make it tangible that we can get by with significantly less artificial light and that the darkness of the night has an immense value that we have overshadowed or even almost forgotten due to over-illumination.

Join in so that at least once a year:

  • a naturally dark night and the magic associated with it can be experienced
  • everyone can see a beautiful starry sky directly above their house
  • Many millions of insects and thus pollinators will be saved from death this night
  • People and all diurnal creatures can sleep more restfully
  • countless nocturnal animals can pursue their actual tasks
  • the easiest way to save energy and CO₂ is realized
  • realize that we could generally get by with much less artificial light

Anyone can participate in Earth Night. Even if you simply close the curtains, that also reduces the amount of light entering the night. And if you can't or don't want to turn everything off completely, you can at least reduce the amount of light. Simply screw in a weaker lamp. Or install a motion detector that stops the constant light. Or better direct the light by tilting the spotlight toward the ground (where the light actually belongs). Shielded lights and/or the use of LED reflector lamps can also help here. Or at least change the light color. yellowish light (warm white, “amber”) provides a darker night simultaneously fewer insect deaths as bluish.
