On September 19.9th, it's time again: LIGHTS OUT for one night! Because through the increasing use of artificial light, we humans are making the nights on this planet ever brighter. This so-called light pollution kills hundreds of billions of insects (pollinators) every year, irritates birds and many other living creatures (including plants), makes sleep less restful, promotes disease, and makes the starry sky disappear. The crazy thing is: About one-third of all light sources shine at night for nothing and no one.
Join in. Turn off the lights. So that our planet can experience a naturally dark night at least once a year. And so that this action will promote a more responsible use of artificial light in the future.
Turn off outside lights. Turn off (or at least partially turn off) all light sources that aren't essential for safety. This includes, for example, shop window/advertising lighting, as well as door, house, property, and facade lighting, as well as natural area and garden lighting. Close blinds. No one has to sit in the dark at home during Earth Night. Simply closing the blinds, roller shades, or curtains on the windows is enough. This will make the night noticeably darker.
