Metropole Ruhr (idr). Through the northern Ruhr area, the Münsterland and Niederrhein: This is where the Hohe Mark Steig, which has been certified again as a “Quality Trail for Hiking in Germany” by the German Hiking Association (DWV).
The Hohe Mark Steig connects around 140 kilometres of diverse and varied natural and cultural landscapes, viewpoints and sights of the Naturparks Hohe Mark. In addition to dense forests, dreamy heathlands, picturesque rivers and lakes, hikers can discover exciting museums and castles along the trail. The Hohe Mark Steig was developed and certified as a quality long-distance hiking trail according to the criteria of the German Hiking Association (DWV). In addition to the striking magenta-colored signage, information boards provide information about special features along the trail, and benches, rest areas and shelters invite you to take a relaxing break. There are numerous places to stay overnight and have a rest stop along the trail. Very good public transport connections offer the possibility of an environmentally friendly journey.
All of the award-winning trails have successfully completed the demanding certification process. It is particularly noteworthy that 20 of the trails have already been certified several times. In order to retain this certificate in the long term, the trails must meet the strict criteria again every three years.
Completed in 2021, the Hohe Mark Steig runs for about 140 kilometers from Olfen to Wesel. It connects the Ruhr area, the Niederrhein and Münsterland RVR, the state of NRW and the association Naturpark Hohe Mark have created this supra-regional tourist offer. The RVR-owned company Ruhr Grün is responsible for its upkeep and maintenance.
