Continuing education Naturpark-Daycare centers: Safe handling of mushrooms in forest kindergartens

The annual training course for educational professionals took place on November 3, 2025. Naturpark-Daycare centers in Naturpark Hohe Mark instead. This year's host was the daycare center Wood mice in HeidenUnder the topic "Mushrooms – fascinating, useful, but also dangerous" The educators gained valuable insights into the world of mushrooms and their importance for working with children in nature.

The training course was led by Mushroom coach Thorsten Wollberg, who provided participants with in-depth knowledge about various types of mushrooms, their life cycles, and identifying characteristics. Particular attention was paid to distinguishing between edible, poisonous, and harmful species, as well as the dangers that can arise in the forest, especially for children.

Following a theoretical introduction, building on the training in January, a Practical field trip to the forest, where the knowledge gained was directly applied. Together, mushrooms were identified, habitats explored, and rules of conduct in case of mushroom poisoning were discussed. In addition, the professionals received tips on the safe preparation of edible mushrooms and learned what to consider when collecting them in a way that respects nature conservation.

Another highlight was a small cooking class on the potbelly stoveThe workshop involved preparing and tasting mushroom dishes. Book recommendations were also provided for those wishing to delve deeper into the topic. The workshop concluded with a Q&A session and a lively exchange of experiences among the participants.

The training course helped to deepen knowledge about mushrooms and strengthen the confidence of the educators in their daily work at the forest kindergarten. This will enable the educators to provide the children with even safer and exciting nature experiences in the future, in line with the principles of... Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) enable.
