Dingdener Büngerner Heide project

“Conservation efforts should – in the words of Californian scientists Catherine Rich and Travis Longcore – tell a story not only of the day, but also of the night.”

To take up this idea, the Büngerner/Dingden Heath best natural conditions. The influence of light on humans and animals is considerable. Light influences behavior and is responsible for biorhythms.
Most living things have adapted to light over the course of evolution. Light at the wrong time disrupts this biorhythm.
Artificial light sources change behavior and impair orientation. The natural night, starlight and the rhythm of darkness determine the life of plants, animals and humans and have a value that is often underestimated and at risk.

The project "Night in the Büngerner/Dingdener Heath" investigates nocturnal, light-sensitive animal groups and their habitats, focusing on the impact of light and light pollution. The project contributes to appreciating nighttime darkness as a valuable habitat. Nocturnal habitats are preserved and promoted.

The project sponsor is Biological station in the district of Wesel, project partners is Naturpark High mark and the “Büngern/Dingdener Heide Foundation”. This is made possible by funding Regional associations Rhineland and Westfalen-Lippe and the integration of Biological station in the district of Wesel in the cooperation that has existed since 2007 between LVR and the one in 2023 from LWL founded nature fund.
